Track girls win sectional crown
The Cazenovia Girls Indoor Track and Field team won its first Section III title in impressive fashion on January 28, scoring 158 points to outpace defending champion Skaneateles (96 points) and nine other programs. The Lakers scored in every event, earned individual sectional champion titles in seven events and broke four school records en route to the victory.
Senior Captain Hollie Marcelle led the Lakers to victory on the track, winning the 600 meter run in a school-record time of 1:42.11 and anchoring both the 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams to first place finishes, each in personal best split times(1:02.6 and 2:30.5). Ashley Winn earned another entry in the record books as she led off the 4×400 in a school-best time of 1:01.0 with Emmajean Speer and Jackie O’Sullivan also contributing to the win. Winn also captured the sectional title in the 55 dash (7.73) and placed second in the 300 (43.11). Jillian Vogl won the 300 in a personal best time of 42.74, took second in the 55 in 7.77 and broke the school 200 meter mark with her 27.4 second lead-off leg of the 4×200 relay. She was joined by O’Sullivan, Piper Gianforte and Audrey Bowers for third place in the relay (1:55.84). Jeanette Cudney was the fourth record-breaking Laker, improving on her own school-best time in the 3000 with an 11:14.19 second place finish. Caroline Marshall ran an amazing 5:12.23 in the 1500, just 1.5 seconds from the school record, to place second with Margaret Wolsey close behind for fourth place. Wolsey also took third in the 1000 in a personal best time of 3:22.88. Alex Dolbear, Rachel Grimm and Emma Wolsey joined Marcelle in their title-winning 4×800 relay (10:44.46).
Junior track star Paige Biviano led the Lakers in the hurdles and field events, scoring three times for the Lakers. She was sectional champion in the 55 hurdles with a 9.49 clocking, placed second in the long jump (15-3) and took fourth in the triple jump (32-6.5). Piper Gianforte was also a sectional champion, winning the pole vault at 8-6 to lead teammates Michelle McGinnis (third, 7-0) and Emily Clipston (fifth, 6-6). Cazenovia’s trio of throwers also contributed mightily to the sectional win, scoring 18 points in total. Christy Tainter led the way (second, 28-5) with Grace Eberle (third, 27-11) and Molly Woodworth (fourth, 27-6.500 close behind. Laura Fitch cleared 4-8 for fifth in the high jump while Audrey Bowers long-jumped 14-3.5 to capture sixth.
Cazenovia’s exceptional depth was a key to their title win, with 29 girls competing at sectionals for the undefeated Lakers. Their ability to contest every event and bring in fresh runners for later races has helped outpace the competition throughout the season which has also included OHSL and MVITA championships.
